Social Networks Taking Over?
http://mashable.com/2010/03/01/social-networks-source-news/
For the past few years social networking websites like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter have been very popular amongst the younger generations (16-25).
This article explains that a study done by "Pew Internet" reveals that more and more people are getting breaking news updates via e-mail and posts from these social networking sites. In fact, the Internet is becoming such a popular medium for relaying news, that "61% of users, get news online", and only "only 17% — claim they read news in a national newspaper such as The New York Times or USA Today"
The reason why I choose this article is because over the past year, using social networking sites and having an online profile of yourself has become a popular trend amongst teenagers. Using this medium as a form of relaying information to students and younger generations is a brilliant way to keep them updated on current world events, and many people can relate to this article. I would not be surprised if they create a movie about a social network considering the current craze over them.
I can personally relate to this in several ways. For example, when Kanye West insulted Taylor Swift on the MTV music awards, I went on my Facebook profile page and there were several peoples status updates commenting on the event. However the most significant example of this was the Earthquake that struck Haiti. As soon as it hit the Haitians, people "Tweeted" and created Facebook help groups to raise awareness and to create fundraising campaigns in order to send aid to the Haitians.
Now is it a good thing that the more and more people are receiving news updates from social networking sites? In my opinion, yes. The people of today are becoming more and more impatient and they would like to avoid waiting through commercial breaks and other unnecessary news updates. Social networking and internet news gives people a brief, instant and aesthetically pleasing way to get the latest news updates.
I personally prefer watching a 4 min Youtube video of a "Youtube celebrity" like "sxephil" or "RayWilliamJohnson" telling me the days latest news updates rather then sitting and waiting until 6pm for a 30min news show. I mean how else did I find out about an "8.8 Earthquake in Chile".
